Do you ever find yourself wanting to spend more time in God’s Word, but life just seems to get in the way? Maybe you’ve had a few great days or weeks of consistent Bible reading, but then, all of a sudden, the routine falls apart. We’ve all been there. That’s why today, I want to share five practical tips that can help you establish a daily Bible reading habit, one that sticks and becomes a nourishing part of your everyday life.
Here are five ways to make daily Bible reading a habit:
1. Set a Time and Place
One of the most effective ways to build any habit is by setting a specific time and place for it. The same goes for reading your Bible. Consider when you’re most focused—maybe that’s first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee, or perhaps you wind down best with scripture at the end of the day. Choose a time that works for you and commit to it.
Next, find a place that feels peaceful and inviting, free from distractions. Whether it’s a cozy corner in your home or a spot outside where you can enjoy nature, let it be a place where you can focus your heart and mind on God. By associating your Bible reading with a particular time and place, you’ll help your brain recognize this as part of your routine.
2. Start Small, but Be Consistent
A common mistake many of us make is setting a goal to read large chunks of scripture every day, only to feel overwhelmed or discouraged when we can’t keep up. Instead, start small. You don’t need to read an entire book of the Bible in one sitting. Choose a chapter or even a few verses each day, and meditate on them. What matters most is consistency, not the amount.
The goal is to engage with God’s Word regularly. As you build consistency, you can expand the amount of scripture you read. Remember, it’s better to spend 10 minutes reading the Bible daily than to spend an hour sporadically.
*Fun fact: this tip is exactly why we keep to just two chapters a day in our No Dusty Bibles reading plan. Speaking of reading plans…
3. Use a Bible Reading Plan
If you’re someone who likes structure, a Bible reading plan can be a game changer. These plans can give you a daily passage to read, taking the guesswork out of what to read next. There are many different plans available, depending on your interests. Some plans guide you through the Bible in a year, while others focus on specific topics or books of the Bible.
Find a plan that fits your season of life. Maybe you need encouragement from the Psalms, or perhaps you want to dive deeper into the Gospels. Whatever you choose, having a plan can help you stay on track and give you a sense of accomplishment as you make progress each day.
4. Incorporate Scripture into Other Daily Routines
One way to stay consistent with Bible reading is to integrate it into other daily routines. For example, if you listen to a podcast on your morning commute, why not switch it up with an audio Bible? Or listen in with us on the No Dusty Bibles podcast? You can listen to scripture while driving, exercising, or doing household chores.
Another option is to pair your Bible reading with something else you already do every day. If you have coffee every morning, make reading your Bible part of that routine. Stack your habits together—this technique, often referred to as “habit stacking,” can help reinforce the practice of engaging with scripture consistently.
5. Invite Accountability
Let’s be honest, staying motivated to read the Bible every day can be hard. That’s where accountability comes in. Find a friend, family member, or small group with whom you can share your Bible reading journey. Check in with each other regularly to discuss what you’ve read and how God is speaking to you through His Word.
Having someone to walk alongside you provides encouragement and can help you stay committed, even on the tough days when you might feel like skipping.
Bonus Tip: Remember Your WHY
As you work toward building a habit of daily Bible reading, remind yourself why it matters. Psalm 119:105 tells us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Spending time in God’s Word is essential for our spiritual growth and helps guide us through life’s challenges.
When you know your “why”—to grow closer to God, to gain wisdom, to be reminded of His promises—staying consistent becomes easier. You’re not just checking off a task; you’re seeking the heart of the One who loves you deeply.
