Live with Courage

  • "I pray because I can't help myself. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God. It changes me." - C. S. Lewis
.
There are days when the words of my prayers are all over the place. My conversation with God is about as focused as a classroom of toddlers exploring a new playroom. When I have too many requests, I can't seem to keep them all straight in my mind and I just dump them all at Jesus' feet, hoping He'll pick them up and make sense of them. Sometimes, I can't even form them into words and they simply come out as, "How long, Lord?"
.
If you're nodding your head right now, you might appreciate David's prayer in Psalm 6. He's got a lot going on: he's facing discipline from God over an unspecified act of disobedience; he's dealing with intense physical pain from an illness so severe it threatens his life; and he's got his fair share of earthly enemies.
.
His prayer includes pleading over all of the above, but the heart of it is captured in six tender words..."how long, O lord, how long?"
.
But as he lifts his requests to God in prayer, something changes. You can almost sense his breath of relief and the lifting of his chin when he proclaims at the end, "The Lord has heard my cry for mercy..."
.
Praise Jesus that He hears our weeping, He hears our cries, and He accepts our prayers, no matter how all over the place they may be. Whatever is filling the language of your prayers today, keep lifting it up to Jesus. Prayer changes us, while the anchor of God's unfailing love stays the same. We may start our prayers with confusion and frustration, but we will end them with the blessed assurance that God will deliver us. He hears. He accepts. He delivers. His love never fails.

  • Anxiety operates like a snowball rolling from the top of a giant mountain until it completely runs you over as you stand near the bottom. At least, that’s what it feels like for me. It will start small and eventually build into something that feels unmanageable. It’s not unmanageable, but that’s the way it wants you to feel.
.
If anxiety has grown into something that feels impossible for you, remember that it’s probably not something you will be able to tackle all at once. I say this to you not to discourage you, but to prevent you from heaping piles of discouragement onto yourself.
.
So…start small. Take baby steps. I’m a huge fan of baby steps. Build your toolbox for battling anxiety and address one item in it at a time. Don’t overwhelm yourself with a complete overhaul because that might lead to more anxiety.
.
Not sure how to build your anxiety toolbox? Come see me at the Beloved Women conference in Raleigh on October 12th. I'll be leading a workshop on Battling Anxiety with Biblical Truth and would love to see you there!
